Masque of the Red Death is a story of hubris and self-importance. The rich all hide in a castle and lock the plague-ridden poor outside to die. As they indulge in their lavish party and feasting, Red Death walks among them in his mask and they each start to die. 

This is also the costume worn by the Phantom to the masquerade in Phantom of the Opera.
